Michael Brooks’ True Cosmopolitanism
An incurable wound has been left in the modern left, and the greater humanity, with the passing of our comrade, Michael Brooks.
As heartbreaking as it may be, that Michael will never write his Manifesto, with only the earliest of sketches of his undying premises for which such a life is deserving, the fight which he fought with such vigour, must be upheld with holy importance, and fought at the same velocity which we have witnessed.
Michael advocated for a compassionate politics which was rooted in foundations far richer than modern partisanism, and inter-political factionalism.
Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anaemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love. ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Possibly Michael’s greatest gift to us is the conjunction of his compassion-sought knowledge of politics tangential, and arguably entirely external to the consensual sphere of Western discourse and policy-making, and his unfettered humanism for which he saw the greatest of humanity for its greatness and the worst of humanity for its capacity for redemption.
Michael, through his crypto-socialist influences on Sam Seder’s Majority Report, and his cosmopolitan-materialist socialism on The Michael Brooks Show, amongst his seemingly overwhelming multitude of other self-inflicted duties, created an overtly internationalist vision for the New Left, where self-identified liberals, social-democrats, and progressives, were made aware of the true atrocities of capitalism, and thus later self-identified as vehement anti-capitalists. This anti-capitalism, this deep-founded hope for a greater humanity and the emancipation of billions, proved to be the driving force behind Michael’s politics and what I became so deeply invested in.
This intersectionality between an undeterred wit, deeply penetrative curiosity, and his humanism, provides the grounds for an adoptable global politic with the empowerment of humanity.
Michael’s vision hadn’t even left from its preconceptions before his passing, and that is a great tragedy. However, no tragedy remains fixed its tragicness when somebody has empowered so many to inherit his vision and broaden his message with only the breadth which humanity allows.
Thus, grievance is good. A kindred light has met its premature mortality. However, we have lost a comrade so integral to the New Left, and whom had such great aspirations for such, that only the enactment and projection of his legacy may seek to justify such an emptiness.
Nothing in this life is certain, yet I am certain that in every endeavour forthcoming, Michael has blessed myself, and everybody who served as witness to his ambitions, with the compassion of his international cosmopolitanism for the emancipation of humanity.
Rest in peace, and power, comrade. Thank you for everything.
